چکیده
ough significant progress has been made iagnosis and treatment of atherosclerotic ,tid artery disease, it still remains a major ogy of stroke, one of the leading causes Iorbitity and mortality in developed counNumerous experimental studies have ’ided convincing evidence that hemodyice play a role as a localizing factor for rosclerotic lesions, presumably reflecting response of the vessel wall to the adjaflow field (2,10,17). Indeed it is known such lesions are associated with areas of shear and recirculation, conditions which found on the non-divider wall in the ceartery bifurcation, the predominant Iocaof plaques (21). Studies on the natural )ry of carotid artery disease have shown not all plaques are progressive, but that e remain stationary while others regress This suggests that actual plaque geomelay influence hemodynamic conditions reI to further plaque development, the rmination of which may provide prognosnformation for individual patients. It is )fore not surprising that there has been increasing interest in 3D plaque nstruction.

Kinematics parameter extraction of longitudinal movement of common carotid arterial wall in healthy and atherosclerotic subjects based on consecutive ultrasonic image processing
Introduction:In this study, a non-invasive method based on consecutive ultrasonic image processing is introduced to assess time rate changes of the carotid artery wall displacement, velocity and acceleration in the longitudinal direction. The application of these parameters to discriminate healthy and atherosclerotic arteries was evaluated. Methods:Longitudinal displacement rate of common ...
متن کاملInvestigation of Human Carotid Artery Wall and Atherosclerotic Plaque Mechanics Using B-mode Ultrasound
ABSTRACT Sequences of B-mode ultrasound images of human carotid arteries were analyzed to assess regional variations in the motion of the wall and atherosclerotic plaques on them. Measurement of the frame-by frame position of discrete speckle patterns enabled the estimation of both radial (circumferential) and axial (longitudinal) motion of the wall. Large differences could be observed between ...
متن کاملAtherosclerotic Carotid Plaques: Multimodality Imaging with Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Introduction The imaging of carotid plaques has undergone a paradigm shift increasing importance being given to plaque characterization. Patients with "vulnerable" plaques are more prone to develop future neurovascular events. Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of multimodality imaging techniques in the assessment of carotid atherosclerotic plaques. Materials and Metho...
متن کاملMild carotid artery atherosclerosis: assessment by 3-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography, with reference to intravascular ultrasound imaging and contrast angiography.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Our aim was to evaluate the usefulness of 3-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (3-D TOF MRA) in detection and quantification of mild atherosclerotic changes of carotid arteries with reference to intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and contrast angiography. METHODS TOF MRA at 1.5 T, IVUS, and selective digital subtraction angiography were performed on ...
متن کاملCharacterization of Carotid Artery Plaques Using Real-time Compound B-mode Ultrasound
Background and Purpose—Real-time compound ultrasound imaging is a new technique for improving the image quality of B-mode scanning. We investigated the value of this method for the characterization of atherosclerotic plaques in the internal carotid artery. Methods—Thirty-two patients (22 men, 10 women; mean age, 75 years) with plaques of the internal carotid artery as identified by high-resolut...
